The Top 5 Things You Should Do Before Baby Comes- by Nicole Palacios©

When you’re expecting, it’s the greatest news in the world. You envision yourself holding your new baby dressed to the nines with all of the great gear you’ve been stocking up on, and you see yourself looking radiant and slim with your doting husband by your side. Bags under your eyes? Never! Mismatched socks and puke stained shirts? Not on your life. You both look terrific and have had enough sleep to achieve anything.

Ok, so that’s not reality. Life does change dramatically and that’s why I have compiled this list of the top 5 things to do before your baby comes. Simply stated, if you don’t do them now, you may never get the chance.

1.   Photographs

Spend the money and get some great photos of both you and your husband, and you and your big old belly. You may feel shy or embarrassed about your growing abdomen, but it truly is the most splendid thing to ever grace the page of a photo album.

These days, there are plenty of photographers specializing in pregnancy photography, and they do a great job. If you feel uncomfortable, try interviewing them first to see what types of things they will do with you. It’s your session, so it should be what you want.

Those photos may end up being some of your favorites, and it’s a time in your life that you can never recapture. As well, your child will grow up to see what you looked like when you were pregnant with him or her, and they may find that photo to be one of their favorites.

2.   Buy a baby book

You may think that you will buy a baby book later, once the baby is here, but believe me, you’ll be busy nursing and attempting to get sleep—not out shopping for trinkets.

A baby book is a legacy that you leave behind, a memory album of events that went on when your baby was small. A book that has pages for “firsts” is great—you can keep track of the first smile, first laugh, first steps, etc. As well, make sure that it has spaces for photographs of special events and times in your baby’s life.

Milestones like first birthday and first holiday can make you smile when you look back on them in your baby book.

My children love to look back and see all of the photos and mementoes that I have placed in their books. To them, those things are very special.

3.   Sleep In

If you’re not already doing it, what’s stopping you? This is one thing that I relished every weekend, or any chance I got pre-baby. Sleep is one thing that you’re going to miss, especially having it on your terms. Once baby is here, you will sleep when they sleep, and not a moment sooner. Those first weeks will seem like one long fog and if you don’t sleep, it will be even foggier.

If you wake up early without trying too, then just linger in bed. Delight in the simplicity of lounging around without having to run to a crying baby.

4.   Girls Night Out

You can go out whenever you want, so why bother setting up a girl’s night out? Once you have a baby, especially a nursing baby, you are a lot more confined with your activities. If drinks are on the agenda, you have to make sure to have a baby that will take a bottle, you have to have enough milk to put in that bottle, and you have to take the time to pump that milk in advance. There is a lot of thought going into that bottle!

Going out now will at least give you some time to enjoy with your friends before you become the one that is always busy. Hey, you’re going to be busy!

Relax now and enjoy the freedom that comes with no kids to answer too. Go out and have an orange juice and let loose!

5.   Go on Vacation

This is the final and most important rule: go somewhere nice and enjoy yourself with your partner! There will never be another vacation without kids (somewhere in the recipe you’ll have to find babysitting etc. even if they’re not coming), so why not take this time to go on a great vacation? Don’t wait too long into your pregnancy as you may be too uncomfortable, but do go sometime in your second or early third trimester. Make sure to bring the proper accoutrements in case you go to a place where you might get sick, and get the proper vaccinations before you leave (check with your doctor).

With only one chance left to have a couples vacation sans kid(s), take this opportunity to enjoy yourselves and try something new and relaxing.

With nine months to think about all the little things, here are 5 things that every pregnant woman should do (in my modest opinion). Take some time now to enjoy the little pleasures in life, and get ready for the biggest adventure of all. Good luck!
